Sexistential, the debut solo show of Simpson Myers, focused on the philosophical statement by Sartre that: “Existence precedes essence”.

The work explored the idea that societal values and expectations of womanhood infiltrate and shape woman’s essence and existence, and, how much autonomy and self direction can a woman actually claim for herself?

The work asks the viewer to see the subject as a person first and woman second, and to question and notice their own subtle bias and perceptions of a woman based on her visual language.

The works comprised of oil paintings, embroidery, watercolour and 3D installation.
